gMail - it's different!

I have been waiting desperately to lay my hands on gMail. Thanks to suman who invited me to open a gmail account (the beta version is not open-to-all yet).

Google revolutionized the Search Engine market with great google adwords concept (text ad). And now with email - they are not just another email service provider - they are innovating the way you managed your email.

To learn more about how gmail looks - go here. To read about new features and how it better in terms of usability - go here. I am gonna spend a little time thinking over their business model.

So, what is google upto here?
Free email service is nothing new. There tons of service providers offering this. So why should i use gmail. The answer is: 1000 MB email storage. wow! But what's the catch?

Google's main revenue comes from 'Google Ad Words'. Over the years Google has been trying to increase the reach of ads all over the internet. Starting from the searh engine ads to the ad sense program. Google content ads (ad sense) have penetrated very well. Coming back to the point - how can google now capitalize on their super hit ad words program - how can they get more clicks for their advertisers. So google thought of email.

The two most common things done by an internet user is:

  • Search
  • Check email

The more email you have the more ads google can show and more money it can mail. While the user would never complain about the ads for the way ads are displayed and content is choosen.

Let's say we are dicussing over an email about making a decision to distribute the flash file to all users in the company by using screensaver as a medium. Don't be suprised if you see a screenswift text ad appearing on the right-hand side of the window pane. I pity yahoo, while he knows i am an INdia (as i have supplied my address) he is till showing me banner ads which I can't click even if I like it - I often see real estate ads, car loan ads which are primarily for americans/canadians.

MSN and Yahoo have already lost great share in the search business, if not for the IMs MSN and Yahoo! would have suffered even higher loss in their user base.

By the way, google signing up takes less than 10 seconds. Email is super fast and interface is - well - KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) again! So, gmail me at shalinjain [@] gmail [dot] com.

gMail is a web-based email service like hotmail and yahoo while Outlook is a client based tool.
